Character(s): Jason Todd, Zachary Zatara, mentions the Penguin
Pairing(s): Jason/Zatara
Word Count: 663
Genre: general/drama

Notes: For some reason, my brain thought these two would make an amazingly snarky pairing. I now dub brain the random pairing generator of wtf! >>;; Bunny is an idiot. Zatara deals. (Also, the title is a palindrome, a word or phrase that is spelled the same forwards and backwards. My beta thought a palindrome would be appropriate because of Zatara's abilities.)

He should fire Bunny, he really should. Who in their right minds would have a show in Gotham? No one, that's who. Unfortunately for Zachary Zatara, he was informed far too late to do anything about it. There was no amount of suave words or magic tricks that could get him out of this show, unless he wanted to cause trouble in Gotham. No one in their right mind would cause trouble in Gotham for many reasons, but the top two being, no one wanted to piss off the villains, and no one wanted to get on Batman's bad side.
The first one did not bother Zatara much. He could handle villains; it was Batman he was worried about. Not that he was afraid of him, per se, it was just when Zatanna explicitly states that magic makes one a meta in Batman's eyes, and Batman has a strict no meta policy in his city, one tends to heed those words.
At this point, Zatara was pretty sure that his presence in Gotham was pissing off the Bat somehow anyway, so he might as well not piss off his clientèle as well. Actually, that was another reason to fire Bunny. Why had she thought an act at the Penguin's Iceburg Lounge was a brilliant idea?
He was to go on in a few minutes before he heard explosions and the indignant and angry squawk of the Penguin. Zatara readied himself as he looked through the curtain to chaos reign over the club. Zatara sighed as he went help, but before he could, a hand covered his mouth, effectively cutting off his only way to end the chaos.
Zatara struggled for a moment before just giving up when he felt a knife at his throat. Not even a normal knife, but a kris, which made Zatara guess this was not just some common mugger. “Hm, I hadn't expected Penguin to have his acts actually be hired to double as muscle,” the man behind him mused. “I'm going to ask you a few questions. I'll move my hand to answer, but remember, if you even begin to say anything backwards, my kris will slash your vocal cords before it does any good. Understand?”
Zatara rolled his eyes at the threat. Like he was really going to try anything with a Gotham crazy holding him hostage. He nodded slightly, avoiding the kris at his neck in doing so. The hand move from his mouth, but he kept quiet, for now.
“So, what is Zatanna's cousin doing in Gotham?” the man asked, grip on Zatara's wrists still tight.
Zatara tried not to growl out his answer. “My idiot manager Bunny thought Gotham was a wonderful stop in our tour,” he said sarcastically before adding. “Obviously, after this stunt, she's going to be short a job.”
The man behind him chuckled a bit. “Obviously, my assessment earlier was partially wrong. Penguin may have hired you to double as secret muscle, but you had no clue,” the man stated, clearly amused.
“Of course I didn't. Why would I want to help him anyway? For that matter, what sane person would come to Gotham of their own volition?” he asked angrily.
The man chuckled again. “Too true,” he said as the kris slipped away from his neck and the grip on wrist gone. “Only reason to visit Gotham is if you want have a roll in the dirt, figuratively or literally.”
Zatara looked at the man curiously. “Is that a proposition?” he asked, almost incredulously.
The man smirked, blue eyes glittering behind a red domino mask. “Take it as you will,” he answered, sheathing his kris. “I'll be done here soon, if you want to make your visit to Gotham worth while.”
Zatara watched as the man seemingly melted into the shadows. He may take the guy up on his offer, if only to make the trip worthwhile, and perhaps, sate his curiosity of what the man's name was.
