Fandom: DCU/Death Note
Character(s): Jason, Mello
Pairing(s): Jason/Mello
Word Count: 419
Genre: general

Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. Prompt was "Death Note/DCU, Mello/Jason Todd, second place." I couldn't resist it. <3 Also using this for my Jason Todd claim at [livejournal.com profile] dcu_freeforall, prompt being 'comfort.' Jason is still world hopping a la Countdown, and he ends up in Death Note 'verse.

Jason was rather sick and tired of all the world jumping that entailed finding Ray Palmer, but he hated more when they got separated from each other. Now he had to find Donna, Rayner, and Bob before they decided he's not worth looking for.

He got his bearings, trying to figure out if they were at least somewhere knew of. Turned out he was at least in America, on the West Coast. Jason patted himself down to make sure he still had his guns and supplies on him before he moved into the shadows to keep out of the way. He did not feel like dealing with people in a world he didn't understand yet.

In one of the alleyways he had slipped into had some old newspapers. Jason skimmed the paper, taking in words such as 'Kira' and 'death by heart attack.' He figured out this Kira person had been killing criminals by way of heart attack, which sounded silly. It seemed Kira was cleaning up the filth of the world, but Jason did not like the fact he seemed to be getting 'God' like status. It didn't bode well with him.

Figuring that staying in the shadows didn't do him any good, Jason moved onto the sidewalk, bumping into a lithe figure dressed in leather and a stylish coat, hood up. Jason still had his domino mask on, so the figure stared at him. Well, Jason believed he was staring; he couldn't exactly see the face under the hood.

"What's with the mask?" the hooded, man from the voice, asked.

Jason tilted his head. "What's with the hood?" he asked back.

The man chuckled. "Same reason as you," he stated, looking Jason over. "Want to help me with a job?"

Jason was suspicious, but he was intrigued by the man in the coat, so he shrugged. "Why not?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They never did get to whatever job the hooded man, Mello he said was his name, had wanted Jason to do. Somehow, they had started talking about places in the world, and that set off Mello on a rant about some person named 'Near.' Not naming names, Jason answered with a rant of his own about 'golden boy' and 'the replacement.'

It ended in bitter laughter and shots of vodka. Then the clothes started to fall away. Jason didn't care about the scar marring half of Mello's face while Mello didn't comment about Jason keeping his domino on, and they forgot about always being second place for a while.
