There was something Matt never told Mello, even though he had pretty much told him everything else. During their time working together before the whole Kira mess had gotten them killed, Matt had been seeing Halle. They had connected over frustration about Mello, and it just spiraled from there.

For the longest time before he met Halle and even some time after, Matt believed that Mello would be his last thought when he died, but as he bled out on the pavement, he thought of Halle and hoped she made it of the mess because he knew Mello was already doomed.
