Well, my trust in Winick is probably broken. Not as badly as BftC since I don't trust writers that well in comics, but read this. *sigh* That lead to this letter I plan to send to DC Comics. Tell me if I need to add anything or up my diction or something. (Also, misplaced the address, if someone'd help me ouy with that, it'd be great.)
EDIT: I added a bit more. I'm thinking about mentioning the Robin arc before BftC since Jason's personality took a turn from grudgingly talking to Tim then BftC. :/
Dear DC Comics (Dan Didio, Ian Sattler, Judd Winick, and other parties of interest),
I am loving Red Hood: Lost Days. Jason Todd is my favorite DC character, if not my favorite character of all time. There's just one thing I can't stand: the little pushes of 'Jason was always bad.' He wasn't. I've pretty much read every comic Jason has ever been in (even the travesties of characterization that were Battle for the Cowl and Batman & Robin), but while he was Robin? He wasn't some paragon of virtue, but Jason Todd was not some evil kid.
Stop pushing the black and white world on Jason. As much as you push, the DC Universe is very much NOT black and white, and Batman part of the universe is less so. Gotham has to be the grayest part of the Universe that I read. Yes, Batman has a strict no kill rule, and Jason flagrantly disregards that as Red Hood, but stop pushing Jason as an all out villain when he's portrayed well as an anti-hero.
If you can't tell, I'm a Jason Todd fan, and there are plenty of us out there. We find him sympathetic and not an all out villain. Don't act like there aren't any of those in Gotham. Just because Jason's way of helping Gotham doesn't mesh with Batman's, and it's 'wrong' to kill people, don't just throw away something with so much potential!
Jason Todd has so much more potential as someone who walks the line between the good guys and the bad guys than someone who is just one dimension: bad. He has so many connections, so many interactions that just aren't utilized. For one thing, he's never made contact (thus far) with Barbara Gordon, who out of the whole Batfamily, might be able to talk him down. Her life was ruin by the Joker, and he knows it (he mentions it Under the Hood during his speech at the end to Bruce with the line 'the friends he crippled'). There's a connection there that's not being exploited.
Not only that, in Countdown to Final Crisis (what actually got me into comics) and Search for Ray Palmer (some of my favorite issues), Jason looked like he was going to be redeemed then it was all turned around and nothing came of it, absolutely nothing. Countdown and Search for Ray Palmer were pretty much completely ignored for Jason's characterization afterward, which really made no sense since he saw himself as Batman and saw a versions of Babs, Dick, and Bruce all die. That's something else that went nowhere when it could have gone so many places.
There's just so much left to do with Jason without making him full out villain. Just consider it.
Signed,
