She had asked for this. A new start, in a new city was what she told her mom when she asked to move away from Gotham. Stephanie never thought her mother would move her to San Fransisco on the complete other side of the country. The unfortunate thing was, once everything blew over in Gotham, Robin would surely return to the Teen Titans and start patrolling in San Fransisco with the other Titans.
Not that it mattered much. It wasn't like Steph was going to crime fight in the Titans' city. They'd only tell Robin, and then he would yell at her. Or worse, ignore her completely after making it clear he still didn't want Spoiler around.
So she packed away here Spoiler costume and all of her weapons and planned to never look at them again. Steph could live a normal life. Unfortunately, life had other plans. She had been walking home from a GED study group when she was attacked. Helpless she was not, and even without her armor and weapons, this mugger should have been a piece of cake.
The problem was that the mugger had meta powers, and without her utility belt, she had no way to counter him. She tried to get away, but he was stronger than her. Helpless was a feeling she hadn't felt since Black Mask had beaten her, and she was not going to be a victim again. Before she could even attempt a most likely futile counter, a lasso wrapped around the meta. When he tried to break free, electricity flowed through the rope, shocking the meta until he collapsed, unconscious at Steph's feet.
Steph followed the rope, looking up to see Cassie. “Uh, thanks,” she thanked awkwardly, not usually someone who needed to be saved quite so badly.
Cassie gave her a smile as she floated to the ground. “You're welcome,” she said kindly. “Do you need help getting home?”
“Nah, I'm good. Thanks, Cassie,” Steph answered which earned her a suspicious look. “Oh, uh, I was Spoiler from Gotham...”
Recognition dawned on Cassie's face. “Oh! Spoiler, right. What are you doing here?” she asked curiously, the unasked 'and where's Tim?' hanging in the air.
“I live here,” she stated as she stepped out of the alley she'd been dragged into. “Not here, but a few blocks away.”
“You left Gotham? Why?” Cassie asked, clearly confused; she never thought a bat would leave Gotham.
“Long, complicated story that will sound really bitter if I tell you,” Steph said uneasily.
Cassie put a hand on Steph's shoulder. “C'mon. Come back to the Tower with me, and you can tell me. I promise you can be as bitter as you like.”
Steph frowned. “I'm not Spoiler anymore because Tim told me 'don't let me catch you wearing that costume ever again.' Bitter enough for you?” she bit out. “You don't want a civilian in your Tower.”
Cassie winced at Steph's tone before squeezing her shoulder. “Not what I expected to hear, but Tim's not the Titans' leader anymore. He can't see you wear the costume at the Tower.” She paused before scowling. “Plus, what gives him the right to tell you to stop crime fighting? It obviously comes to you even out of costume, so might as well be prepared, right?”
Steph mauled over that for a moment before grinning. “All right, I'll take you up on that, but let me make sure we're on the same page. You want me as a Titan?” she asked cautiously.
“Yeah, of course!” Cassie announced. “You were a Robin, right? The Titans kind of suck without one.”
Steph grinned. “Well, I'm not Robin anymore, but let's see how Spoiler can help,” she conceded. “Let's go?”
Cassie shook her head. “Titans together, actually,” she joked as she held out a hand for Steph to grab. “We can hit your house first, if you want your costume.”
Steph grabbed Cassie's hand and held tight when they took off. “Let's. Spoiler's seen enough of the inside of a cardboard box,” she announced as they head to her house then to Titans' Tower.
