She had been stalking them since they came back into town. Stalking Red Hood at first, curious to who he was, what he was doing with Robin, until Batgirl saw him take off the helmet. Batgirl immediately could tell who he was, even though she was not around to met him then, the second Robin. It had to be. Black hair, blue eyes, male, dangerous and gorgeous were the mark of a Robin.

Cass scowled under her mask at the thought, since Steph had been Robin too, but without the first four criteria, Steph was never really Robin. Cass shook those thoughts from her mind, keeping in mind Steph was good enough, even if Batman never thought so.

She continued to watch the boys, not being able to hear what they were saying, but body language always spoke louder and meant more than words to her. Batgirl had been told stories of the second Robin. Never an ill word spoken, though body language always told a different tale. 'He was a great Robin,' they would say with their mouths while their bodies betrayed, 'but he was never quite good enough.'

Cass had to stay her ground when she saw Robin, Tim, crumble into Jason's arms. Tim's shoulders shook, and she knew why he was crying. The loss of his father, no doubt, and the loss of Steph so soon after. Cass could never understand having then losing a father that actually cared, but the pain over Steph's death was something she could relate to.

Soon, Batgirl crept in closer. At this point, even in close range of two people very capable of perhaps spotting her, she knew they would not. Tim was too emotional and Jason too focused on Tim. Batman would have a fit, she thought to herself as she made a new perch to watch them from in the shadows.

“I think I'm seeing a pattern, now. Even Robins will always die.” The words from Tim made Cass shudder on the inside, the pain in his voice almost as clear as the pain shown in his body language.

She watched as Jason put a comforting hand on Tim's shoulder. “I came back, Tim.”

Cass frowned underneath he cowl. She had known that this man was Jason Todd, but she still had no explanation to why he was alive. Batman or Oracle would know, and she planned to ask one of them once she knew Tim was safe, hopefully asleep in a bed.

“But she won't. She had training, but not nearly as much as you or me or Dick.” Batgirl continued to watch and listen as Tim broke down in Jason's arms.

Jason's body language looked conflicted, Cass noticed, as if he had no idea what to do with the crying Tim in his arms. She was sure she would feel the same way. Cass started to feel uncomfortable watching this, thinking this must be what they call a private moment, but until Tim was safe in a bed, she was not going to leave.

It had been a while, but Tim's sobs subsided. Jason was rubbing Tim's back soothingly. Jason quietly muttered something she could not hear before Tim spoke up, voice sounding horribly raw. “She reminded me of you.”

Cass' heart clenched in her chest, before Jason answered. “Did she?”

She saw Tim move in Jason's arms. “Yeah. She was brash and reckless at times, but she was one of the best people I've ever known. You would have liked her. ...or you two would have fought since your personalities are so similar.”

She heard a chuckle from Jason. “Wish I could have met her, then.”

Cass was beginning to wish it too. Then, she would be alive. “Me too... I think, she reminded me of you... That's what attracted me to her.”

After Tim finished talking, his breathing evened out. Cass saw Jason gather Tim in his arms, heading off. She followed for a bit until Jason turned around, staring at the shadows she was creeping. She knew he knew she was not Batman, but Cass knew he knew she was there. After a moment, Jason let himself into his apartment, not considering her a threat. A dangerous move, she thought. Batgirl may not be Batman, but she was a formidable opponent, even if this 'Robin' had not learned it yet.

After a few minutes, Batgirl perched herself outside the window of the apartment, noticing Tim fast asleep on a bed. He was safe, for now. She could go back to patrolling, though she guessed telling Batman about Jason Todd's reappearance to the land of the living may be in order.

The window opened next to her, and Jason leaned out, looking at her. She stared back through her cowl. “Batgirl,” he greeted, as if he knew her. Cass frowned underneath her cowl. “I did some research before returning to Gotham. I won't do anything to baby bird, promise.”

“Baby bird?” Batgirl questioned.

Jason chuckled. “Well, Dick called me little wing, so I thought since he's the baby of the family-”

“Would have made Stephanie baby bird,” she interrupted quietly.

He frowned, taking a moment to carefully choose his words. “I didn't know her.”

“You knew this Robin?”

“Yeah, I knew him, before I died,” he answered, running a hand through his hair. “You're going to report to Batman about this, aren't you?”

“Tim is safe. That's all he needs to know,” she paused for a long moment. “For now.”

Jason nodded his thanks. Batgirl titled her head, a sort of goodbye, before launching herself off the window and into the night. Batman could find out his second Robin was alive on his own, Cass was sure of it. No need for her help.

I like your Cass voice! Its great to see her carrying on the long, proud Bat-tradition of dysfunctional behavior. Why just *walk up and ask* when you can skulk and stalk to get the answers? Loved the little exchange between her and Jason at the end, and her obvious concern for Tim! Good stuff!
