He had not been kidding when he said his was a mess back at the Tower. Part of him, the part of him that he used to be, wanted nothing more than to be who he was before finding that stupid birth certificate, before finding his mother, trusting the bitch, before the Joker and his fucking crowbar. Then, a slightly bigger part of him that was screwed up from just that experience, just wanted to crawl back to Batman begging for him to make it better. And that was why the biggest part of him ignored these parts. Those parts of him were weak and fragile, and really? Jason would never admit it out loud, but his mental was falling apart. Before Talia found him, his physical state had been even worse off.
Jason shook his head as he continued to watch Tim sleep fitful in his bed. Jason's bed had nothing on the beds back at the Manor, either manors the kid had live in, but Jason did not think it mattered at this point. Tim probably would have passed out on the roof had Jason let him.
It calmed him, watching Tim sleep. Jason had not felt this calm since long before his death. The month or so before his death had been tumultuous. Finding out that his biological mother was alive, leaving Tim with a grin and promise of return though he really just wanted to drag him along to keep himself sane, finding his mother and trusting her to only be stabbed in the back, and finally, dying after the brutal beating from the Joker's crowbar and the explosion that followed after.
After that, things were blurred. Jason tried not to recall the time after his death until the time he really regained his mind after being tossed in the Lazarus Pit, if you could call it that. Talia had saved him from Ra's Al Ghul's wrath, only to kiss him and shove him on his way. Her few words pushed him on the track to check into what happened since he had died. He was shocked when he heard the Joker was still alive. No, scratch that, he was fucking pissed. Why had that bastard lived when Jason had not for at least six months?
After the initial findings about Joker, Jason went more in depth with his research. He saw the papers about Barbara Gordon, how she was paralyzed from the waist down because of the Joker. The list of the Joker's crimes just continued. Jason gritted his teeth the whole time as he moved his research from the Joker to the rest of 'family.'
Nightwing never really showed up in Gotham unless absolutely necessary. Batgirl had become Oracle, from the rumors he had heard, and she even had her own Birds. After a year or two, he noticed the emergence of a new Batgirl, a much darker version than her predecessor. He ignored the fact that Batman's behavior had been erratic after his death once he honed on the fact that he had been replaced.
Jason forced himself to watch, pick up on how the new Robin moved, but before he could show him that no one could replace the second Robin, a fourth Robin fell into the third's place. Confused as hell, Jason researched her. She had been the Spoiler that had been hanging around the third Robin, and that was all he found out before he found Spoiler back in business with the third Robin back where he did not belong. Not that the girl belonged either, but she had found that out the hard way, apparently. Even Robins were cursed to die was the fleeting thought that went through Jason's head at that point, and he just laughed in this girl's memory, wondering if she would appreciate it.
Briefly, he thought of turning his attentions on Batman for revenge, but first, he would prove that there would be no such thing as a Robin after him, ever. Jason was not sure what he was going to do when he crept into the Tower, almost laughing that his DNA signature was still valid post-mortem, but he had not even an inkling that Tim Drake could have taken over the Robin mantle. Of course, Jason had always joked that Tim would have made the perfect Robin with some combat training, but he never really believed it would happened. If he did, he would have needed to believe that he himself could fail.
Before he started finding out information about his 'family,' he had a brief passing thought about looking up Tim, but he let it be just that, a passing thought. Jason did not need friends, and Tim never really needed a friend like him anyway. He always thought Tim would grieve, but go back to his normal rich kid life. Man, he was wrong.
Watching Tim sleep, still in uniform, made him wonder why he ever thought Tim could be normal. He had been stalking Batman and Robin in the shadows since he was nine. There was no coming back from that sort of obsession and dedication.
Tim being Robin put a kink in his plans. Though, at this point, he might as well scrap them. Even after of years of not seeing Tim, he was sure he could Jason as well as he ever did, if not better with the Robin training. There was no way he was going to be able to do anything in this town now unless he took killed Robin.
That thought sent a shiver down Jason's spine. He could never hurt the kid, not before and not now, even with the nagging voice in the back of his head telling him to do it. Damn, the fact that part of him wanted to kill was going against every Bat thing he had ever had pounded into his head. Jason rubbed his temples as he noticed Tim was sitting up, staring at him, and must have been doing so for quite a while.
He glanced at the beat up clock at the bedside table. “When did you wake up, kid?” he asked, now rubbing the back of his neck.
“A few minutes ago. You look like you were brooding,” Tim paused. “Did you even sleep?”
“Don't need to.”
Tim raised an eyebrow. “Yeah right,” he said with a look.
Jason rolled his eyes. “I'll get some sleep later.”
“No, now,” Tim stated, crossing arms, his look and demand that reminded him a lot of the look Batman used to give him when he would disobey an order.
“Maybe I should start calling you mini-bat instead of baby bird,” Jason muttered as he moved towards the bed.
Tim blinked, the look falling away easily. “Huh?”
Jason laughed as shoved Tim over in the double bed. “Batgirl was here last night, and I dubbed you baby bird, though she disapproves.”
“I do too and don't you dare call me mini-bat,” he said shoving Jason back as Tim slipped out of the bed.
Jason grinned, pulling off his shirt and tossing it aside before he laid down, arms behind his head. “You do you know saying 'no' to me is like saying 'yes, yes, yes'?”he questioned smugly.
Tim rolled his eyes as he straightened out his costume. “Why did you let me sleep in costume?” he muttered.
“You wanted me to strip you?” Jason asked with a lewd grin, which was made worse by the fact he was lounging in bed without a shirt.
Tim blushed. “Ugh, never mind,” he grumbled as he made his way for the window, but Jason grabbed his arm.
Tim looked down at Jason who was staring at him hard. “What are you going to tell Bruce?” he asked quietly.
“A lie, of course.”
Jason looked skeptical. “You really think you can lie to him, Tim?”
Tim snorted, pulling his arm away from Jason's grip. “I've lied to him before. He'll find out eventually, but he won't find out now,” Tim answered, opening the window before turning back. “I- Can we hang out after patrol?”
Jason hesitated, not sure what his state of mind would be by nightfall, but he nodded anyway. It was not like he could really deny Tim anything, even had he wanted to. Tim smiled then leaped out the window, sticking to the shadows that were ever present in Gotham, even in the early morning.
