Steph looked all over town for Tim, but he had left with such mean words, and she was almost certain he had left the city. Her heart ached at the thought, so she packed a knapsack and went on a search to find him.

The search lead her far and wide, giving her only hints of whispers about the Snow Queen who had to have taken Tim away. Steph had no idea how to get to the Snow Queen’s palace, and the friends she made along the way hadn’t been able to give her much more than ‘head north.’

While heading north, Steph had the misfortune to run into a thief. His knife gleamed, pointed at Steph’s neck. Nothing that she had received so far from friends could protect her from this particular threat.

“Please let me pass,” Steph begged. “I must find the Snow Queen.”

The thief laughed. “You wanna find the Snow Queen?” he asked, twirling his knife. “Did she turn your boyfriend’s heart to ice and steal him away?”

Steph flushed. “Yes, but Tim’s not my boyfriend...” No matter how much she wanted him to be; she had yet to tell him her feelings before he had disappeared.

“Cute,” the thief boy said, suddenly moving, his curved knife pressed to Steph’s neck. “Give me a reason I shouldn’t slit your neck and take that pretty cape you’re wearing.

“Because,” Steph replied, removing the warm cape the Oracle had give her for the harsh north’s weather, “I’ll give it to with no fight.”

The thief boy took it skeptically. “But you wanna save your boy toy. You can’t go north without this.”

“I will make it through without the cape,” Steph announced. “Anything to get to Tim and save him.”

The cape was thrust back into Steph’s arms with a huff. “Keep it, girlie,” he muttered, “on one condition.”

“Yes, anything,” Steph answered.

“Sleep with me and keep me warm tonight before we head to north,” the thief boy told her then grinned. “And call me Jason.”

Steph blinked. “We?”

“I am heading north to the Snow Queen’s palace, and I needed your cape, but your throat is too pretty to slit,” Jason explained. “This way, we’ll share it, and we both get our way.”

“Oh thank you!” Steph exclaimed, hugging the thief.

Jason stiffened then sighed. “If you squirm in your sleep, don’t surprised if I stab you,” he muttered, no venom in his voice.

A few days later, the two travelers reached the palace of the Snow Queen. Jason distracted the Snow Queen as Steph went on a search for Tim. When she found him, he was idly tracing math equations in the snow, eyes completely blank except for the shard of mirror that had pierced it and made his heart a lump of ice.

“Tim!” she called, running to him. “I’ve come to rescue you!”

He said nothing, continuing to trace the numbers and patterns. Steph’s face fell before she shook her head, determined to get through to him. She wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tight. Steph held him as long as she could before the cold emanating from was too much to bear.

“Tim, please. It’s Steph...” she murmured. “Please remember me.”

Tim froze for a split second before continuing to draw his equations. Steph made a little whimpering sound, about to fall to the ground when strong arms wrapped around her, keeping her upright. Before she could see who it was, she felt a familiar curve knife to her neck.

“Hey, pretty boy, I’ve got a knife to your girlfriend’s neck,” Jason said, dangling Steph in front of Tim. “Better snap out of it, or her blood’s gonna look awful pretty painting the snow.”

Steph tried not to breath. She wasn’t sure what Jason was up to, but Tim had reacted, more than before. Tears were starting to run down his cheeks as he continued to write in the snow. Steph wanted to call out to Tim, but speaking with a knife to her throat would just be foolhardy.

“All right, fine,” Jason growled, pulling his cape around Steph and himself. “Your girlfriend dies now.”

The knife cut into flesh, and blood splattered on the writings Tim had made in the snow. The tears came faster, and with all the tears, out slipped the mirror shard. With the shard gone, Tim collapsed to his knees, his heart thawing.

“Steph...” Tim murmured.

Steph peeked out from the cape. “Tim!” she exclaimed, rushing over to him and pulling him into a hug.

“You’re okay,” he whispered then pulled her into a kiss.

She was surprised, but kissed back happily. “That’s quite a hello,” Steph murmured when the kiss broke, her cheeks painted red.

“I thought you died!” Tim exclaimed before turning to glare at Jason. “How dare you-”

Jason scoffed, wrapping his hand with a strip of cloth from his shirt. “Yes, how dare I slit my own vein open to make you think I killed your girlfriend, so you’d snap out of it,” he said sarcastically. “I’m so bad.”

Tim flushed with embarrassment. “Sorry,” he muttered. “And thank you.”

“Did it for her, not you,” Jason replied, tying his bandage tight.

Tim looked to Steph who was smiling and clinging tightly to him. “I’m glad we could save you,” she said against his neck. “Now, let’s go home. All of us.”
