So, that paper...
Mar. 10th, 2008 10:40 pmI doubt anyone wants to read it, but here's my Mello and Near comparison-contrast rough draft. Tell me what you think? Also, spoilers for the end of the series, at least vaguely. There a few little lies in there, I think because it was easier to say things in definites even though they aren't actually definite.
Rough Draft - Essay #5
Comparison-Contrast: Point-by-Point
Mello and Near: Black and White
Two of the main characters from the second half of an anime called Death Note are complete opposites in almost every aspect of their character. Just looking at them shows major differences in style and physical appearance, and their personalities are contrasting as well. Although they have rather glaring differences, they still have a few similarities that would make them complement each other if they were to get along.
Near and Mello, the two characters, grew up together in an orphanage called Wammy’s House. They were the top students in the elite training program the orphanage had to train children to become the next L, the greatest detective in the world. They both admired L greatly, but that is where the similarities end. Both may have astounding intellects, but everything else about them is polar opposites.
The first difference is that Near seems much younger than he is. At the age of eighteen, he looked as if he was still a twelve year old, but his short stature and the fact he still plays with toys contributes to this mistake. Near is only five foot, and he still plays with action figures, robots, puzzles, and other toys from his childhood. He says it helps him concentrate on whatever project he is concentrating on at the moment. When he his solving an important case, he twirls his hair childishly which usually means he has a plan or had solved the case.
On the other hand, Mello looks his age. At the age of twenty, he was five foot six, and if someone were to mistaken him for a child, they would most likely have gun in their face until they took back those words. As well as carrying guns, Mello always has chocolate with him. If Mello has no chocolate, he is not as capable of solving cases, and he tends to be very irritable because of it.
Near has instantly recognizable features such his stark-white curly hair, very pale skin, dark eyes, and simplistic fashion taste. He looks cute rather than handsome in the clothes he wears. A white long-sleeved button up shirt and white pajama bottoms are Near’s clothing of choice. Near does not care that the stark white clothing make him look like ghost; he only cares that his clothes are comfortable.
Unlike Near, Mello is very handsome with straight blond hair and blue-green eyes, and his clothing choice complements his handsome features. Mello tends to wear a lot of tight leather with stylish boots, ornate belt buckles, and fur edged coats. The tight leather shows off his build rather than it being worn for comfort.
Having the top grades at Wammy’s House, Near’s intellect is unrivaled. He may play with toys, but this does not make him a child since the toys are usually used to demonstrate a point or to dumb down what he wants to explain into laymen’s terms. The use of the toys shows he has a great amount of creativity which shows in his cases, like the Kira case where he, to distract people wanting to kill him and his group of government helpers, had money thrown into the streets to cause a panic, so he could escape unharmed with the help of his government lackeys. Although Near has great ideas, he is not capable of pulling off any of his plans on his own since he lacks good social and life skills.
Although Near may have Mello beat in intellect and creativity, Mello makes up for it with copious amounts of social and life skills that Near never had a good grasp on. While in the orphanage, Mello made many friends, such as his best friend Matt who helped Mello with a plan that he needed a second person to help with he could trust. After leaving the orphanage, Mello easily lived on his own and easily manipulated a mafia group in L.A. at the age of fifteen.
Near does not tend to take initiative very often, which is part of the reason that he stays alive by the end of the series. He solves the Kira case with the help of something Mello did before he died. If Near had taken more initiative, he may have died right along-side with Mello.
In contrast to Near, Mello thinks something through once and immediately puts his plan into action. During the Kira case, he kidnapped someone to help prove who the killer was in the case. Mello's gung-ho way of going about things got him killed in the end, even though the end resulted in what he wanted, the capture of the killer.
Mello and Near have very few similarities and plenty of differences, but their differences complement each other in a way that one of their strengths would make up for the other's weakness. Had these two geniuses worked together from the beginning, they could have caught the killer in the Kira case much faster with fewer casualties. It would have been the difference between life and death for Mello, and Near may have gained some social skills.
